Unveiling the War Memorials - Weston-super-Mare

World War 1 - World War 2

The ceremony of the unveiling of the First World War Memorial was a very impressive one.

It took place in Grove Park by the Marquis of Bath as Lord Lieutenant of the county and dedicated by the Lord Bishop of Bath and Wells in the presence of many thousands of people from around the area.

Thousands of people from all over Weston came to pay their respects to those who had fallen.

The gardens were separated into many sections to accommodate the many different organisations and members of the public.

A new war memorial made of Portland stone was erected in the flower border behind the first memorial because there was no space left for the hundreds of names to be added on the first memorial.

Nine bronze panels surmounted by the Borough coat of arms, bear the names of the fallen on a large stone memorial.

157 service men and women and 114 civilians were inscribed on the panels.

A new plaque bearing the inscription” Rededicated to the honoured memory of all those of the Borough of Weston who lost their lives in the War, 1939 – 1945.” This plaque also bears a coat of arms, in coloured enamel.
