Opened in May 1856
 

Several members of the burial board visited the new burial ground in May 1856.

They found that the works in an advanced state that it would be open for internments as early as the end of May.

Although the architect had not yet formally handed works over as complete.  

The first internment took place on Saturday 28 May and was officiated by the Rev R C Pritchett

The cemetery was not consecrated until nearly two years later, due to some unforeseen legal battles.
It was finally performed on 29 December 1857 by the Rev W. Hunt reading prayers in a most impressive manner. A numerous congregation was present on the occasion.

 

Weston’s Great War Cross of Sacrifice Unveiled - Sunday 31 March 1929

 

In the presence of several hundred people and relatives of the fallen, and on a site overlooking the town.

Mr T E MacFarlane, J.P., C.C (chairman of the Weston-super-Mare Urban District Council), yesterday afternoon unveiled a Great War Cross in the local cemetery.

The cross which  is of Bath stone, with an unsheathed sword pointing downward on the face, has been erected by the Imperial War Graves Commission to the memory of members of H.M. Forces who gave their lives for their country in the Great War 1914-18 and who are interred in the Weston cemetery, and is inscribed

“This cross of sacrifice is one in design and intention with those which have been set up in France, Belgium and other places throughout the world where our dead of the Great War are laid to rest.”  
“Their name liveth for evemore.”
